This is a follow-up to the October 2006 TechLink article SI Definitions - Removal vs. Replacement which mentioned that SI revisions would be coming. Since that article was published, SI has been updated for the following model years and service categories.
Beginning with Model Year 2003
ENGINE
Engine Mechanical
Beginning with Model Year 2007
TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE
Automatic Transaxle
Automatic Transmission
Manual Transaxle
Manual Transmission
Transfer Case
TIP: Model years before this update have a separate Unit Repair Manual available.
These categories have two repair selections:
Repair Instructions - On Vehicle --
Here you will find replacement procedures. A replacement procedure is the in-car repair procedure for the component. The replacement procedure also includes the steps required to remove all of the vehicle platform components before accessing the specific component.
Repair Instructions - Off Vehicle --
Here you will find separate procedures for removal, disassembly, cleaning and inspection, assembly, and installation for a specific component. These procedures are meant to be performed with the component on a stand or bench. There is logical order to the way these procedures are listed in SI. For the most part, you can follow the procedures from top to bottom to perform a complete overhaul.
Removal Procedure contains instructions to remove a component from a larger assembly.
Disassemble Procedure contains instructions to disassemble the component that was removed, and is typically performed on a bench.
Cleaning and Inspection Procedure contains instructions to clean, inspect, make adjustments to or measure the component.
Assemble Procedure contains instructions to assemble the component that was removed, and is typically performed on a bench.
Installation Procedure contains instructions to install a component back into a larger assembly.
Some engine-specific procedures also included in the Off Vehicle category are cylinder boring, honing and valve grinding procedures.
Understand that you will have to use your judgment when it comes to deciding which procedure to follow. You may not need to perform every procedure, based on the repair that needs to take place. Example: if you are replacing a crankshaft, you may not need to remove the cylinder head.
REMINDER
Replacement procedures can be performed on vehicle.
Removal and Install procedures are performed off vehicle.

The supplier was changed from Osram to Philips. During the supplier change, a design change of the bulb eliminated a coil. This coil was shown to cause a voltage spike to the ECM/AHL during headlamp start up that would damage the ECM.
All xenon bulbs carry the same part number, regardless of supplier. However, the 10-digit serial number on the lower left hand side of the label (fig. 5) of the Philips bulb indicates whether the bulb has a coil or not. The digits in positions 5 through 7 indicate the coil situation.

A Manufacturer
B Number sequence location
Positions 5 through 7 of serial number | Coil/No Coil |
139 or 140 | Lamp has coil |
141 or 142 | Lamp has NO COIL |
If the vehicle has a failed headlamp ECM/AHL, inspect the bulb serial number. Bulbs with the 139/140 sequence must be replaced with the 141/142. Only the Philips bulb will have this code/serial number.
TIP: The xenon headlamp ECM is the same module as the AHL.

On rare occasions, machining debris may be found on the oil filter element during the vehicle's first oil change. This debris consists of small boring chips and milling burrs from the oil passage that is between the oil pump and oil filter.
If this condition is encountered, replace the engine oil and filter. No additional repairs should be attempted because this debris does not affect the reliability or durability of the engine.

On rare occasions, the engine oil dipstick may become unseated on hard acceleration, resulting in an engine oil leak. If the engine is operated long enough like this, a P0171 DTC could set due to the engine ingesting unmetered air.
This condition is the result of excessive crankcase pressure on hard acceleration. The crankcase pressure may be the result of an intake manifold gasket concern that allows supercharger boost pressure to bypass the intake manifold gasket where it seals around the PCV orifice, between the number 2 and 3 intake runners.
If SI diagnostics do not isolate a cause for this concern, replace the intake manifold gasket using p/n 12597855, which contains an updated sealing surface around the PCV orifice.

Bulletin 06-00-89-029A has been released to update information about vehicle interior cleaning.
IMPORTANT: The bulletin applies to all 2006-07 GM vehicles, including Saturn, Hummer and Saab, except Cadillac DTS with RPO R9N - Tehama leather.
An article in the August 2006 issue of TechLink explained the applications and procedures for low gloss interior cleaners and conditioners.
Harsh cleaning products are not recommended for the low gloss materials. Silicone and wax-based products can alter the appearance of low gloss surfaces. The cleaning products approved by GM are in the neutral-pH range, water based, biodegradable, and do not contain bleach, solvents or harsh chemicals.
TIP: Interior trim pieces on new vehicles and service components arrive with a protective film. The approved cleaner for leather/vinyl/plastic/interior paint can be useful in removing adhesive residue left when the protective film is removed.
The revised bulletin includes information about a new piece of cleaning equipment and the cleaning concentrate used with it. Here are highlights.
Ruby Upholstery Extractor (fig. 1)

Ruby Upholstery Extractor 627-CC-300AU is available from GM Tools and Equipment (phone number 1.800.GMTOOLS).
The materials explained in the August article are suitable for cleaning many interior areas and removing many kinds of stains. But, when faced with difficult-to-clean stains and when cleaning a large area, the best results are obtained using an extractor machine and concentrate. The Ruby Extractor is such a machine.
Many features of the Ruby machine make it ideal for cleaning automotive interiors, because it controls the amount of cleaner and water applied, to avoid soaking.
- water pump pressure regulated to not wet fabric surface more than necessary
- effective stain removal products help break the stain down so the stain is easily removed with less water
- dry time is greatly reduced because there is less water on the fabric surface, and the vacuum head makes better contact with the surface to easily remove the stain
- the narrow design of the vacuum head allows detail work in tight areas
TIP: Vacuum the upholstery or carpet before wet cleaning.
A Before cleaning (fig. 2)

B After cleaning (fig. 3)

Cloth and Carpet Cleaner Concentrate
The concentrate (fig. 4) that goes into the Ruby machine is mixed at 4 oz. of product per gallon of water. It is slightly acidic, to remove soap and alkalinity from the fabric surfaces left behind by using improper, soapy solutions.

Dirt, grease and grime are easily removed when the proper solution is used during the extraction process.
Optical brighteners in the concentrate help rejuvenate fiber color.

Engineering has determined that a blocked reverse shift may occur 20% of the time. This condition is an inherit characteristic and should be considered normal.
A higher frequency of blockouts (above 20%) may be considered abnormal and is cause for a vehicle inspection. Much also depends on the customer's shifting habits (normal or aggressive).
The correct procedure to follow when shifting for blockout is:
1. Shift into 1st gear
2. Move vehicle forward slightly
3. Stop and shift into reverse.
TIP: Shifting the transmission into reverse while the vehicle is moving increases the tendency to blockout due to damage of the meshing teeth and is considered abuse.

This information applies to 2006 Saab 9-3 Sedans from VIN 61031969 onward and 2006 Saab 9-3 Combis from VIN 61031971 onward. This does not apply to convertibles.
A replacement window motor may not bolt up to the existing regulator and is from a new manufacturer (Lames). No supercession is shown in the electronic parts catalog-EPC
(fig. 9).

A Old style (2003 through mid-2006)
B New style (Lames)
From the mid-2006 model year, the rear door window motors/regulators were changed to a different manufacturer on manual transmission cars without anti-pinch only. The front doors on all 9-3 Sedans & Combis changed to the same type at VIN 71108595.
Neither change is shown in EPC, and parts are not available from SAN. No date is set for correcting EPC at this time.
The only current solution is to replace the regulator/motor assembly with the earlier version. The operational characteristics should be the same.

Some navigation radios will not play a DVD audio or DVD video disc. There are two navigation radios released for the 2007 models listed above. Both navigation radios look identical but have different functions internally.
A navigation radio with RPO UVB listed on the RPO sticker is capable of playing DVD movies and DVD audio.
A navigation radio with RPO U3U listed on the RPO sticker will not play DVD movies or DVD audio. This navigation radio is capable of playing only a DVD navigation disc. This is normal operation and no repairs should be attempted.
TIP: A simple way to tell if a navigation radio is capable of playing DVD audio or video is to check for the DVD symbol on the left lower corner of the radio.

When working on a 2002-07 Saab 9-3 or 9-5, be sure to follow the correct procedure found in WIS under Transmission -- Automatic -- 5 speed -- Adjustment Replacement -- Checking the transmission fluid.
Inadvertently removing the 20mm plug near the transmission range switch may damage the transmission. This plug is actually the anchor bolt for the 3rd gear band. Removing it may cause internal parts to become dislodged and codes to set, requiring transmission replacement.
Do not remove any of the plugs on top of the transmission for checking or adding fluid. Use only the transmission fluid dipstick on the front of the transmission for fluid level checking and filling.

Some owners of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra may comment on a rattle from the dash area. This rattle could be caused by the engine cover contacting the front of dash/cowl area. The engine cover is retained at the rear by two C-style retainers.
An engine harness that is not properly seated in its U-channel (fig. 10) can obstruct the engine cover from going into its C-retainers. This will push the rear of the engine cover up and contact the front of dash/cowl area (fig. 11).

To correct this concern, fully seat the engine harness into the U-channel (fig. 12). Reinstall
the engine cover, making sure it is retained properly in the C-retainer.

TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLERS
Here's how to connect a trailer brake controller to the 2007 Silverado and Sierra pickups. These instructions do not apply to trucks with option JL1 (Integrated Trailer Brake Controls) available on H.D. trucks for 2007. Also, trucks with option TP2 (H.D. availability) already have the 12v battery trailer feed used as part of that RPO.
This hookup is entirely different from the earlier Silverado Classic and Sierra Classic.
TIP: The owner manual (page 483) refers to 4 wires, but there are 5 wires looped back in the IP harness. The fifth wire is not required with most systems (see table below).
1. Locate the trailer brake control circuits looped and taped to the main harness under the IP (fig. 13).

2. Pull the trailering wire harness down.
3. Match vehicle harness label circuit functions to the trailer brake controller jumper harness functions (fig. 14).

TIP: Match functions. The colors of wires that are to be joined together may not match.
VEHICLE HARNESS FUNCTIONS
Wire Color | Function |
Dark Blue | Switched power from controller to trailer brakes |
Red with Black Stripe | Fused vehicle power to electrical brake controller |
Light Blue with White Stripe | Brake switch input to power electric brake controller |
White | Ground |
Orange | CHMSL (not required with most systems) |
4. After completing the under-IP connections to the electric brake controller, open the hood and locate the red wire taped to the harness between the under-hood electrical center
(fig. 15) and the driver side front fender.

5. Break the tape on the red wire and pull the wire toward the front of the vehicle.
6. Remove the cover from the electrical center.
7. Place the terminal on the larger of the two studs (fig. 16) at the front of the electrical center and secure with an M8 nut.

A Location of larger stud
B Existing fuse
TIP: The fuse is already present in the vehicle to power the electric trailer brake controller system.
AUXILIARY 12 VOLT FEED TO TRAILER
This hookup may be used operate electrical devices in the trailer -- for example, a refrigerator or a battery charger.
1. Locate the red wire looped and taped to the chassis harness below the brake master cylinder (fig. 17).

2. Break the tape and route the wire to the front of the vehicle under-hood electrical center.
3. Place the terminal on the smaller of the two studs (fig 18) on the electrical center and secure with an M6 fastener.

A Location of smaller stud
B Install fuse
4. Install a 40 amp fuse to power the circuit.
TIP: Devices powered by this fuse will drain the vehicle battery if left connected with the vehicle not running.

Some owners of a 2007 Silverado or Sierra with RPO CF5 may comment of a water leak from the driver side of the sunroof assembly. This could be caused by a blockage of the driver side sunroof drain hose in the cowl. In some cases, the drain hose may be too long and the end of the hose is bottomed out against the body sealer.
To correct this concern, remove the cowl screen and wiper assembly to shorten the hose. This will provide additional clearance between the end of the drain hose and the body sealer.

The key fob in figure 19 (shown in the owner manual) never went into production vehicles. The key fob in figure 20 is the correct production key fob for all 2007 and prior model vehicles. An insert was placed in all owner manuals stating this change. Do not attempt to order the new style key fob as it is not available.

TIP: When attempting to order the key fob shown in the owner manual, the same key fob used in prior model years will be received from SPO.

This information applies to Rainier, TrailBlazer, Colorado, Envoy, Canyon, Bravada, HUMMER H3 and Saab 9-7X built between 2004-07 with any of the following engines:
2.8L (VIN 8 - RPO LK5)
2.9L (VIN 9 - RPO LLV)
3.5L (VIN 6 - RPO L52)
3.7L (VIN E - RPO LLR)
4.2L (VIN S - RPO LL8)
On rare occasions, the Lower Timing Gear Tensioner Holding Tool (EN-48464) may come out of position while replacing the cylinder head as outlined in 06-06-01-017C. If this occurs, the timing chain tensioner will ratchet out, and the engine oil pan and front cover will have to be removed to reset the timing chain tensioner.
Here are some tips that may prevent this concern from occurring:
1. Thoroughly review 06-06-01-017C before starting the cylinder head replacement process.
2. Review the June 2006 emerging issues broadcast, which contains a video of that highlights the procedure for a 3.5L L52 5 cylinder engine. An archived copy of this seminar can be viewed by visiting www.gmtraining.com. Once you log in with your Training Person ID, you can view the seminar by taking the following path:
Web Video Library > Click Technical > Type EN48468 in the search box > Click Search > Click Emerging Issues - June 2006 > Scroll the list of topics > Click New tool EN48468 > Click Play.
TIP: General Motors employees logged into GM Online may not be able view this video due to a conflict with the GM Online firewall.
TIP: Canadian Dealers: refer to taped copy of the August 2006 TAC TALK IDL broadcast.
3. Before using the tool, be sure the tool handle and threaded rod unscrew from the wedge(fig. 21).

The tool handle should not unscrew from the threaded rod (fig. 22), leaving the threaded rod screwed into the wedge. If it does, apply thread locker to the threads of the tool handle and screw it onto the threaded rod to prevent it from coming off in the future. Do this before using the tool.

4. When inserting the wedge, be sure it is installed in the correct direction (fig. 23).

5. Bulletin 06-06-01-017C says the wedge should be lightly seated using a couple of very light taps with a small plastic or brass hammer. Although these should be light taps, they should be solid to ensure that the wedge is seated properly.

A Distance Learning session is also being planned in the near future. The broadcast will allow each dealership to review how to program the new system, how to utilize the Quick Start brochure and how to perform diagnostic checks for service requirements as well as customer support provided by the supplier.
Customer Tips
Review the programming instruction to become familiar with the operation and use of Car2U system. If you need any assistance or have questions, direct inquiries to https://www.learorders.com/contactus.aspx or 866.572.2728.
If a customer with a Car2U-equpped vehicle indicates that their device will not work, review the programming instructions with the owner. Be sure they are using the correct programming procedure for the Car2U system. Provide the owner with the Quick Start brochure, the web site www.learcar2u.com and the toll free number so they can program the device on their own, should a similar situation occur in the future.

Wire Color
Function
Dark Blue
Switched power from controller to trailer brakes
Red with Black Stripe
Fused vehicle power to electrical brake controller
Light Blue with White Stripe
Brake switch input to power electric brake controller
White
Ground
Orange
CHMSL (not required with most systems)

For the 9-3 2.0T, the connector is present if the car is not an Aero and has the premium audio system (6-disc changer, additional speakers, XM).
TIP: Not on any model with Navigation or OnStar.
For the 9-3 Aero 2.8 HFV6, the connector is present if the car has the Touring Package (rear park assist, memory seats, rain sensing wipers).
TIP: Not on any model with Navigation or OnStar.

IMPORTANT: To qualify for installation of the RVS accessory kit, the vehicle must be equipped with an automatic transmission and RPO AP8. While AP8 may be standard equipment on some vehicles, it must be ordered for others.
The vehicle with RPO AP8 is remote-start ready. Hardware typically includes hood-ajar switch and associated wiring, an extended range receiver, and antenna. The remote start accessory kit includes key fob transmitters with remote start capability, software download instructions and a SPID label.
For answers to questions you may have about model application, VIN code, and the part numbers for the applicable installation kit and instruction sheet, go to the TechLink website. Click on the Reference Guide tab, then scroll down to Remote Vehicle Start Kit 2007 applications. Click to open the application table.
NOTE: The table for 2006 vehicles is still available in the Reference Guide, also.
